St's new chip is expected to save 100 terawatt-hours globally by improving the energy efficiency of consumer electronics

St-one power controller combines STMA MasterGaN technology to create a record-setting laptop/smartphone charger design with energy recovery capabilities

July 7, 2022, China - STMicroelectronics (ST), the world's leading semiconductor company serving multiple electronic applications, Nyse :STM) is enhancing the sustainability of personal computing products through its next generation of innovative technologies. The new chip, called ST-One, will improve the energy efficiency of various AC-DC adapters, fully compliant with usB-PD 3.1 standards, including laptop and smartphone chargers. Using ST-One's new adapter can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and plastic consumption.

The new ST-One chip can be paired with STMICROELECTRONICS MasterGaN power output modules based on advanced gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology. GaN chips can significantly save power and reduce device size.

While laptops offer optional power-saving Settings, each machine can save more power if equipped with a more efficient power adapter, improving the environment and carbon dioxide emissions. The ST-One chip is optimized for power control and can recover the energy that would normally be consumed in a conventional circuit in the form of heat. The product also simplifies circuit design and significantly reduces the number of power components, making this type of power more robust, more economical, and more widely adopted throughout the market.

Domenico Arrigo, general manager of STMICROELECTRONICS Industry and Power Conversion, said: "If each power source uses ST-One energy recovery circuit design, and the power adapter efficiency is improved by at least 1%, the world can save about 93 terawatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the output of 15 nuclear power plants. "In addition, if one billion chargers worldwide use our technology, 200,000 tons of plastic and raw materials can be saved."

The reduction in consumables such as plastics is achieved by increasing what is known as power density, which allows smaller components to handle larger power outputs. High power density also reduces recovery and environmental costs.

At the recent Embedded World electronics show in nuremberg, Germany, stmicroelectronics unveiled the EVLONE65W, a 65-watt usb-c laptop power adapter reference design that is the same size and weight as a standard 20-watt smartphone charger (37 cubic centimeters, Less than 70 grams), achieving an ultra-high power density of more than 1.8 watts per cubic centimeter.

Detailed Technical Information

The st-one is optimized for the new non-complementary active clamp flyback topology design and supports higher power, with higher efficiency performance above 65W than other flyback topologies such as quasi resonant flyback.

The chip is the world's first single-package integrated Arm® Cortex®-M0+ core programmable off-line power controller, high voltage start circuit, synchronous rectifier controller and USB power supply (USB-PD) circuit digital power controller.

The ST-One contains all the peripherals needed to control power conversion. Usb-pd communication is located in the secondary circuit and provides enhanced current isolation to allow primary and secondary circuits to communicate while meeting electrical safety requirements.

Also available with MasterGaN integrated with advanced wide-gap crystal power tubes and optimized GaN drivers, the adapter can operate at higher switching frequencies, allowing for the use of smaller magnetic components to maximize power density.

St-one comes with 64KB embedded flash memory for designers to customize USB-PD protocol and set power conversion parameters.

St-one controller flash is pre-loaded with USB-PD 3.1 PPS certified firmware, providing users with a complete solution to design standard power supply.
